THE SILK ROAD FORUM - MADRID.

The Silk Road foresees the creation of an intercontinental network of land and sea corridors to connect three continents and Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed the joint building of The Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (to be known as the Belt and Road).

The first annual conference of the Silk Road Forum was held in Istanbul., Turkey, in 2014 with over 200 attendees, and the 2015 Madrid Forum, attended by some 300 guests from more than 30 countries, debated topics such as infrastructure connectivity, international co-operation in production capacity, Silk Road construction, and a sustainable development agenda.

Li Wei, director of the Development Research Centre, in his opening speech stressed the importance of this tool to escape financial crisis and help establish stability and recovery in the global community.

The "Silk Road Think Tank Network" (SiLKS) was also launched during the Forum.

In his address, Lyu Fan, China's ambassador to Spain said that Spain, which marked the western end of the old Silk Road, was one of the creators of the Maritime Silk Road.

The Chinese Embassy in Spain, in conjunction with Development Research Centre of the State Council of Chine (DRC), the Centre for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD), and other sponsors, held The Silk Road Forum in Madrid the 28th and 29th October, with Jose. M. Chiquillo, Senator for Valencia in the Spanish Government, as one of the guest speakers (photo on the left).
